In 2021, I took on five reading challenges, and completed them all. I read 268 books, with 187 of those by Australian authors, and 81 non-Australian authors. Most books I read were by women, with 150 by Australian women. I read for pleasure, review, and my quiz writing work, and covered as much ground as I could in terms of genre and diversity, without putting too much pressure on myself to read what seemed to be expected at times. Next year, I am taking a relaxed approach to challenges. I’ve chosen the Dymocks challenge and the Australian authors challenge – both because they are open and easy, and the categories in the Dymocks challenge are broad enough that some of them might work for multiple books or have multiple books. Even the extra challenging categories look like I’ll finish them. So here is my year-end summary. Most posts linked within this one have links in them – or you can use the search function to find any of the books on my lists!
Australian Authors Challenge – 24/24 (106) Kangaroo Level, Emu Level
Dymocks Reading Challenge – 26/26
Overall goal – 268/170
Total Australian authors read: 187
International: 81
I didn’t end up doing any challenges this year. I’m thinking of doing the Dymocks one next year and maybe The Sunday Book Club Reading Challenge that I saw on Instagram.

The dymocks one looks good. It’s one that’s usually
Pretty open to interpretation which is why I like it. I can read a book and see if it fits rather than stressing over making sure the book is excellent right to fit a narrow and prescriptive prompt.
