One of the challenges I took part in this year was the #AussieYAChallenge, hosted by Amy at Lost in a Good Book. I had planned to read to the highest level, which was Nix – read twelve books, because at the time, I wasn’t sure how much Australian YA would come my way. I ended up exceeding that – and read 32 Australian young adult books, and completing all the prompts as well. It’s good to see more Australian young adult books coming out, but we need more and need more advocacy around this area. Challenges like this, or awards like the CBCA awards can promote Young Adult books. I have found that they’re quite diverse – they explore a wide range of topics that I have found adult books seem to avoid. I’ve found a wider range of voices in YA as well, and this appears to be changing too, giving readers more options with what they read.
Some of the books I read could be classed as middle grade and young adult, so I have included those ones here based on posts I saw about them from the fabulous team at #LoveOzYA. The list is skewed towards women authors, but I did find that at least in Australia, based on my reading and exploring bookstores, there do seem to be more women authors in this area, or at least within the genres found in YA that I read and enjoy. I love young adult books and am looking forward to reading more next year.
