Synopsis: Nora Nightsky is a star-literally. Her glamorous mum is the North Star, and their dazzling family works hard, bringing to life the Little Bear constellation and sprinkling magic down to earth to grant human wishes. But Nora is nowhere near as shiny as her perfect brother and sister. She prefers a cosy black hole! She doesn’t think much of wish-granting either. Why can’t humans solve their own problems?!
Then one day, a girl wishes on Nora for the first time, asking for a pet. Rebelling against the rules, Nora sneaks down to Earth with her best friend Leap, a cute hare constellation, to give the girl a piece of her mind! Nora agrees to help Olivia get a pet-through determination, a cunning plan and plenty of mischief. But can she do it before she runs out of stardust and is trapped on Earth forever …?
~*~
As a star, Nora Nightsky is supposed to shine bright and grant wishes. But it’s a bit hard when your Mum is the North Star and your siblings, Koko and Fergus are dazzling stars in the Little Bear constellation as well. And they grant so many wishes!
But Nora is the opposite. She’s not shiny, and she prefers cosy black holes and hanging out with Leap, a hare constellation. Plus, she’s so not into granting wishes and thinks humans should solve their own problems.
Until the day she gets a wish from a girl called Olivia who wants a pet. At first, she really doesn’t want to. Like, really doesn’t want to. Olivia won’t give up though, so Nora and Leap hop on a comet and head to Earth to let Olivia know how they feel! Except…things don’t go quite to plan.
Nora agrees to help Olivia with a sneaky plan to avoid granting the wish, except she needs to make sure she can get home before her stardust runs out and she’s stuck on Earth forever!
The latest book from Rebecca Lewis-Oakes is all about stars, magic, wishes and how we can make our own luck, even if we need a little push from someone else. Nora has no idea how to act in the human world, and she’s determined to shake Olivia and get home and back her black holes as soon as possible.
Yet, mischief and mayhem, and learning how to apologise become central the story, as well as Nora learning a bit of humility and how the human world works. At least she can say she has one up on the rest of her family and their wish-granting abilities!
Things are riotous and filled with havoc from the start. There’s a disastrous zoo trip, an unfortunate Leap chase, and well, let’s not get started on the cat or the fact that nobody seems to notice Nora doesn’t really know how to address people in the human world. This makes her fumbles amusing and suitable for her character and someone that kids will be able to relate to.
It’s a different take on magic and stars, and it looks like it is going to be a series, so I wonder what other mischief Nora will get up to when she gets wishes to grant. This looks like it is going to be a fun series, and the best thing is, it looks like Nora could be an easy Book Week costume!
