Non-fiction picture books are becoming big these days, covering a wide range of topics and areas of interest. Whether it is science, history, or nature, these books aimed at readers aged five and over are full of fascinating facts that give a beautiful introduction to the world and all of its wonders.

One of the latest books like this is the first in a new series called Find Me. The first book is called Find Me on the Coast by Jess McGeachin, and it allows readers to travel the various coasts of the world, exploring beaches, seas, coral coasts, sea life and everything that lives within the oceans around the world. This book is a journey for the reader, written and illustrated by Jess. He has used watercolour to create the lively and realistic images that pop off the page and bring the coast to life. They suit the prose perfectly, because each spread reveals something magical about the coast, and how it gives life to the animals there.

It shows how the creatures thrive and survive, and how important it is to keep their habitats safe and clean, evoking a climate change and environmental message in an age-appropriate way. Helping children understand big issues through picture books is a great way to build their knowledge, and it can work for all ages and can have many educational and entertainment applications. It’s a picture book with heart, soul and knowledge that is perfect for all ages. The colour bounces off the page, and reverberates appropriately for each section of the reef, or each type of coastline that is represented throughout the book.

The journey is undertaken by a young boy, which makes it relatable, something that younger readers can get into. They can see themselves in the book, and it makes it so enjoyable to read, especially as the words and pictures work so well together. That technique makes picture books work well. This looks like it is going to be a great series, filled with lots of learning opportunities for readers of all ages.
