This unknown object is their only chance to defeat the Administrator – before everything that makes the World wonderful is lost, in a whole new way …

Jake and Marisol have been home for six months since their last adventure. But whilst Jake is in Melbourne, and Marisol is on a family holiday in Bolivia, they, along with Marisol’s brother, Victor, are whisked back into the World Between Blinks – but at separate ends. What they find is a changed world, where everyone and everything is being catalogued. To stop the Administrator and Curators, they must find each other and find their friends, Amelia Earhart, Percy and others that helped them last time. But they must also find the Rocket – a mysterious item that will take them into the depths of the yetis to find. They need the Rocket to defeat the Administrator and prevent the World Between Blinks and everyone in it becoming lost forever.

Join Jake and Marisol on another thrilling adventure in The World Between Blinks, and help them save their friends and the world, as well as themselves, so they can get back to their families. The second book in this series picks up six months later – where only Jake and Marisol have any memory of what happened. Written in alternating perspectives, Amie Kaufman and Ryan Graudin have built on their magical, mysterious, and historical world from the first book, and bolstered what we know about the World Between Blinks. With new characters to meet and old ones to reunite with, the book is a seamless continuation of the first book whilst also being its own story and entity. The best way to read and appreciate these books is to read them in order, as the second refers back to things that happened in the first one.

The mix of history, magical realism, and mythology, as well as unique fantasy features and strong familial connections for those who have been to The World Between Blinks creates a story that engages the reader, and takes them on a thrilling, fast-paced journey, where at times, it feels like you’re there in the world and flying along with Marisol and Jake. It’s an immersive experience with diverse characters and experiences that captures different cultures and languages but also the universality of being human, of memories, of family, and everything else that makes us human in today’s world, and the departure from COVID plots makes it a nice story to read when the world and information  about COVID gets too much.

I love the current crop of middle grade books coming out, with so many diverse stories and characters. It gives me a nice scope of reading material, and a good selection for all readers to read. I’ve got way too many that I have enjoyed to choose a favourite or list of favourites because it’s just too hard to pin any of them down like that. They’re all so different and I’ve enjoyed them all for many different reasons. I highly recommend this book to those who have already read the first World Between Blinks book, and urge those who are keen to start with the first book.
