Book two of the Oceanforged series by Amelia Mellor is here! Join Cori, Tarn and Jem as they meet the Loyalists, hear of impending disaster for Aquinta, and head off to Mutemount, the silent island to find the next piece of the armour. Cori can’t save Aquinta without all the powers of the Champions, so the quest continues.
Mutemount is isolated, cut off from the world by leviathans that threaten them. And nobody has returned from Mutemount in a hundred years, so there’s nothing to say anyone will be there. Until Cori and her friends meet Jodo and Dasko, and become part of the Mutemount community.
Their quest is interrupted briefly, but they find people willing to help them on the silent island, but for a price. What will they be willing to risk or sacrifice to get the next piece and save Mutemount from the sea monsters?
The second book in the series picks up soon after the first one, and establishes a tighter timeline for Cori and her quest, something that they didn’t know in the first book, so now there is something to work towards. By the end of this book, she should have two pieces of the Oceanforged Armour. Hopefully. There’s a lot to do though, and everyone on the island is convinced Cori, Jem and Tarn are staying for a long time.
It’s an adventure on the high seas but with a difference, and whilst there are pirates sometimes, this series is all about saving a world made up of islands, loyalty and who we can trust. It also explores teamwork, and digging into things that have led to vast misunderstandings to find non-violent ways to solve any issues, and forge new understandings going forwards. It’s all about finding ways to work together as well for Cori, Tarn and Jem, who find themselves at odds throughout this novel. Cori and Jem are pulled into helping the Mutemountians, determined to keep a promise and only seeing one way to do it.
Because they all have different ways of doing things, they are very different people and each of them brings something unique to the trio and what they can do, or how they do it. It works very well in the story, and they’re always learning from each other as well.
This series is going well, and there are at least three more books to come before Cori completes her quest. This is definitely one that needs to be read in order, so all the clues come together, and everything makes sense as you go on the journey with Cori, Jem and Tarn. I am looking forward to seeing where this goes and how it all comes together in the final book.
