Andromache Peters is back – after saving her dad from a parallel universe, learning that there are different versions of everyone she knows, and sending the man who trapped her father there to jail. So, the adventure should be over, right? Not a chance! Andromache thought she’d be able to go back to her quiet life, to school and reading, and her friends, Rylee and Tobias. But now, Vincent Black, the man who almost ruined her family, who has been trying to control and destroy the world. He’s determined to make Andromache pay, as is a secret organisation that protects the worlds, universes and the different versions of history, events and people.

The story kicks off when Andromache agrees to help them catch Vincent. Which should be easy to do, especially with her best friends helping her.

Andromache, Rylee and Tobias journey through worlds filled with robot police, a Napoleonic war that never ended filled with suspicious soldiers, and giant centipedes to find Vincent. Their journey reveals that in some universes, the places they know don’t exist. The things they know don’t exist. History has changed, and the fate of doppelgangers is wildly different. Tragic, even. The threats build throughout the novel as they chase Vincent and 846, who may not be what they seem to be. But can they trust anyone on this adventure? Andromache and her friends are constantly on edge, never really knowing who they can trust, hoping that they are trusting the right people. Especially when unexpected encounters have them questioning what they have been told.

As Andromache and her friends complete their quest, the undercurrents of the first book ripple through alongside the new threats and obstacles that could help Andromache solve the mysteries of what is going on, confront the ghosts of her past, and finally save her family. Help her father come back to being the person he used to be before he went missing thirteen years ago. Because to Andromache, this is her family, and she wants to protect it. Gabriel’s stunning follow-up to Andromache Between Worlds highlights the importance of friendship, loyalty, and not taking what you are told on face value. Double check your facts and sources, because it can be very hard to tell what is real and what isn’t. Or what people want to tell us to convince us to believe something. It’s subtly and cleverly done through a rollicking adventure that brings the wonder and danger of travelling between worlds to life in an inventive way.

The Andromache books are filled with heart and soul, family, friends, history, science and an examination of what happens when people try to manipulate time and space. It’s cleverly written, and follows on well from the first book, which does need to be read first to understand the world Andromache is part of. It’s a great addition to the series, and continues it well, with excellent doses of fun, fear and everything in between to make this a great read for middle grade readers and fans of Andromache and her friends.
