In 2024, I also aimed to read more LGBTQIA authors, but one thing I struggled with here was the amount of romance books on offer. As someone who doesn’t read romance as a genre in general (though I don’t mind it as part of the story, it’s just that I tend to get bored when it’s the only thing going on), I actively sought out books that didn’t have this as a focus this year by LGBTQIA authors. I was interested in the stories beyond a romance, the families and friends, the stories that talked about being LGBTQIA in other ways as well as romance. I enjoy finding out more about the people, about how they navigate friends and interests as well as intersectional identities, because this is where I find the good stuff can be. Where I can truly get to know a character or person.
I will note that I did read other books with LGBTQIA characters this year, but this round up is about authors who are LGBTQIA, and are open about it, because I feel that this is an important aspect of some of these lists – showcasing the authors.
Any authors that I wasn’t able to identify as LGTBQIA or Indigenous this year are in my other round ups with any reviews linked there. I didn’t have time to review everything this year, but still wanted to share what I have read.
