Our favourite furry friend, Peter Rabbit, is celebrating his 120th birthday with a picture book edition of the original classic tale. This new large format is perfect to for families to share and read all about Peter Rabbit’s very first adventure!

Peter Rabbit has been an icon of children’s literature, starring in everything from books to toys to films! This original tale sees Peter at his most adventurous, cheekiest and lovable self as he wriggles into Mr. McGregor’s garden – and into reader’s hearts.

Beatrix Potter’s original text appears here in full, along with her beautifully engaging illustrations in a new format, perfect to introduce children to this famous rabbit.

Ever since it was first published in 1902, children across the world have read and loved the adventures of Peter Rabbit and his friends. This year marks the 120th anniversary of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, and Warne/Penguin Random House has released a new edition with the complete story, and a shiny gold cover with a badge that reads: Peter Rabbit: 120 Years of Mischief. This little story about a rabbit whose nose for cheek, mischief, and Mr McGregor’s garden has endured because it doesn’t talk down to children, and doesn’t force a didactic lesson. Peter is so unlike his sisters, who are good little bunnies, and he doesn’t heed the warnings of cousin Benjamin Bunny or his mother about the garden! Poor Peter, he only wants to munch a few veggies, but he can’t seem to stay out of trouble or stop losing his little coat and shoes!

Beatrix wrote and illustrated these books, taking inspiration from her beloved Lakes District, where she eventually moved to upon becoming financially independent. Over many years, she created the Peter Rabbit stories, and these have endured for generations, so that nearly everyone knows them, and knows the characters that populate the books and the world that Beatrix has created, and in a way that it feels like they must all know each other, or at least know of each other. Peter is just the start.

I have loved these books since childhood, and they have always been with me, so this new edition will be very much treasured – it is something special to hold onto, alongside my originals to share and enjoy with others, and relive the beautiful stories of my childhood and the childhoods of generations before me. It is a delightful story with humour, action, giggles, and sense of security at the end – a happy ending that brings everyone and everything together under one roof to reassure readers that in the end, everything will be okay.

Books like these can be read aloud, or alone, to build on reading ability, confidence, and as a way to start to learn to recognise story and words, and the relationship between the images and words on the page in picture books, as the pictures tell as much of the story as the words do, especially in contemporary picture books. In Beatrix Potter, we get such a delightful story that can be enjoyed by readers of all ages, which is truly the magic of picture books. You’re never too old for a good picture book!

This is the perfect book for those new to the world of Peter Rabbit, and for those who are familiar with it, and will make a lovely collector’s item as it is an anniversary edition. Peter Rabbit has a place in all our hearts, and is one of those iconic children’s characters who will always be a part of us, even when we have grown up.
