Learn your alphabet whilst also learning about Australian animals! What could be more fun? Jennifer Cossins has created another fantastic alphabet book – this time with a focus on Australian animals that readers of all ages will adore. First published in 2018, the A-Z of Australian Animals has been released as a paperback, and will sit nicely with Jennifer’s other books, like the Ultimate Animal Alphabet Book and the Ultimate Animal Numbers Book, to begin and build on a child’s understanding of letters and numbers, alongside animals, ecology, and Australian animals in particular in this book. Each letter is paired with an Australian animal – some well-known and others that might not be, the common name, the scientific name size, a description and fun fact, and a colourful illustration of the animal.

The combination of the above makes it an engaging and educational read, to help children recognise letters, animals, and their names, and give them a chance to learn whilst having fun. It is the kind of book that engages children visually, aurally, and for their literacy development as young children. Each child will respond differently, but ultimately, the book allows this to happen and allows kids to learn in their own way whilst enjoying this book. There were some animals I’d never heard of so it was fun to find out more about Australia’s fauna diversity, and where they live whilst also recognising the ones we all know well.

Its focus on Australian animals is perfect for an Australian audience, and can help introduce an international audience and newcomers to our country to our varied wildlife, and showcases how special they are to Australia. It can be used at home for entertainment, in a home-schooling environment, or in a classroom setting for a variety of reasons, and can be enjoyed by kids of all ages – it is one that will be loved for a long time to come.
