Pack your suitcase for a magical adventure!
At the Strangeworlds Travel Agency, each suitcase transports you to a different world. All you have to do is step inside…
Flick is now a badge-wearing member of The Strangeworlds Travel Agency so when an urgent summons arrives at Strangeworlds from Pirate Queen Nyfe, she and Strangeworlds Society guardian Jonathan immediately pack their bags for an adventure to Queen Nyfe’s world: The Break, a place of magic and piracy.
Nyfe’s world is falling apart. The Break is used to having ships vanish without a trace, but there has been a sudden increase that can’t be explained by giant squid or mer-people. The edge of their flat world is coming ever closer to them and they need to escape before it collapses entirely.
But how do you sail a ship through a suitcase? How do you fit a mer-queen the size of a whale into something small enough to carry in your hand? Will Flick and Jonathan be able to find a way to transport the inhabitants of the Break to another world before theirs disappears forever?
A magical adventure for 9+ readers that will take you to whole new worlds, perfect for fans of The Train to Impossible Places and Pages & Co.
Several weeks have passed since Flick’s last journey with Jonathon Mercator and the Strangeworlds Travel Agency, and her parents have grounded her, Yet she yearns to go back and help Jonathon, and one day, she is drawn back into the world of travelling suitcases and thrust into an urgent race against time to save a world known as The Break, where various sea faring people, mer-folk and many others who will be affected when the world they live in collapses. So it is up to Flick, Jonathon and Jonathon’s cousin, Avery, to find a new world for Captain Nyfe and the others in her world. But when the only way to travel through worlds is a suitcase, and most people are living on ships, just how can you get everyone and all the ships through safely?
Flick is back, and this time, she is caught up in a time sensitive journey that gives this story a faster pace, and a brand-new adventure that captures the imagination and draws on classic fantasy tropes yet puts the women at the centre of the story, and gives them equal power, standing and influence with the male characters. Divisions abound as well – illustrating that conflict can manifest itself in many ways – between families, friends and everyone in between, because life is about conflict, friends and family, and the everyday things that annoy us, all the way up to the bigger issues that can eventually unite us and bring people together for the better, and to ensure safety if all those in the world.
The second book in the Strangeworlds Travel Agency series is its own story, but also opens up a new mystery that Flick first discovered in the first book. This mystery is one that evolves over the course of this novel and draws on what we know about Flick’s family from the first book. It looks to be an ongoing thread throughout the series, that will explore Flick’s family, identity and her talents and magic that have started to manifest themselves since she came into contact with the Strangeworlds Travel Agency. Like many portal stories and series, the Strangeworlds Travel Agency has a unique way for Flick and her friends at the agency to access the worlds they visit. It has built on a strong tradition of portal stories, and even when a similar way of accessing the portal is used, it is the way the author uses it and allows it to work within the story they have created that will be unique.
This series is a promising one – one that will charm middle grade readers of all ages. It is a series best read in order -as it will build upon each book with the subsequent books and looks as though it will bring in various plots and story threads that will come together and hopefully, unite family, and help the Strangeworlds Travel Agency survive. It is also a story of friendship and filled with magic of all kinds that makes the world and worlds travelled to unique, exciting and filled with such wonder. Worlds where time passes differently too, impact how Flick handles her life going forward. Novels like this are always exciting and will have a loyal following.
Another fantastic Strangeworlds book!
