Sharon Giltrow’s picture books like Let’s Go Shopping, Grandma and Let’s Get Ready, Mama centre the child characters as the responsible ones who need to look after the adults in their lives. In her latest one, a little girl wants to take grandma shopping. But grandma doesn’t want to and gets up to all sorts of antics in the shop! Will grandma behave?

These books are lots of fun, because it takes what children do in situations they’re not fond of – getting ready, shopping, and turns it around so the adults are being silly – and in doing so, reverses the roles of caretaker and child in a fun, accessible and entertaining way that readers of all ages will appreciate and relate to. The little girl in this faces a dilemma that parents often face – what happens when you take your child shopping and they don’t want to, or want to buy things that you don’t need, or what if they need to go to the toilet right near the end of the shop? The role reversal is entertaining and can help children understand what the adults in their lives see and go through in a cheeky way. This will be a great book for families and educational settings to help teach children about routine, being in society, and working together.
This could be a clever way to teach children how to act in the shops and what they might expect to see and experience while they are there. Let’s face it, grocery shopping is never fun, and a book like this shows what it is like when things don’t go to plan, but all in a gentle way that shows children how they can be responsible when they are out shopping with their adults. It does explore conflict between adult and child in the shopping centre and does so without shaming the child. The funny role reversal means that there will be something for everyone to relate to in this book and Sharon has created a story that will have children giggling and show them that shopping isn’t always boring – and sometimes you have to do the boring things and find ways to work together to get through the shopping trip.
Another fun picture book from Sharon.
