Books are real-life magic. They can transport us anywhere we want to go. Take us to magical places, allow us to go on grand adventures and help us meet fabulous diverse characters from all corners of the real world, beyond the known world and all manner of imagined worlds. But what happens when the characters start coming out of their books at the New York Public Library? What has caused this? Only Page and Turner Reed, ten-year-old twins who have spent a lot of time at the New York Public Library in the absence of their parents can find out!
Tired of being overlooked by their parents and dumped with a nanny, Page and Turner decide to head to the library to get their father’s rare, valuable edition of Dracula assessed. But the book escapes and unleashes the unexpected – a world where characters are pulled from their books and leap between the library and books to find out what happened and get the book back. What they don’t realise is that when they set off on the journey with the Night Librarian, they will be drawn into an epic battle with the classic book characters to save the library – but can the ensure it remains safe from complete and utter destruction?
This new graphic novel from Christopher Lincoln bring libraries to life, much like Night at the Museum did for the Museum of Natural History. The premise of what happens at a library after dark is interesting premise, because for so many readers, books are magical and powerful. The characters and stories emerge when they’re bored of their stories, tired of doing the same thing day in, day out. And yet, there is a threat from Mr Keljik throughout the book, who is trying to make things hard for everyone, including the Night Librarian Ms Literati. It’s filled with adventure and excitement, centring magic, reading and kids at the heart of the story. And brings somewhere that is filled with a special kind of magic to life – what more could you want? Apart from potential destruction of the library, that is.
The Night Librarian is a classic quest story with a difference – it’s set somewhere people may not always expect a book to be set, and that’s where it works well. The library is somewhere safe. It’s where Page and Turner are happiest. It’s when weird things like a dragon imprint and giant beanstalk showing up start happening that really kicks things off. This fun story traverses New York, fantasy worlds and time travel to find out what is going on with the books and characters, who will work to help Page and Turner save the day – even if a few deals have to be made along the way. It’s a fun book that has a bit of everything for everyone, and shows just how magic reading can be – and yes it might come with a bit of danger, but it all adds to the magic of the story and what it gives readers.
