My Mum is the Best is a celebration of mums – what they do for us, the fun we have with them, what they love, and what we love about them. It shows how special mums can be, even when they might ask us to do things that we don’t enjoy doing through fun rhymes and vibrant illustrations of animals in mother and child pairings throughout the book, that all relate to various actions, words and everything in between. Nic McPickle’s latest follows on from Nic’s My Dad is the Best that celebrates dads.

This is a very Australian book, where koalas and other Australian animals feature throughout the book. The koala mum and child are the central characters in their story, and kids get to experience the full spectrum of emotions they feel when spending time with mum, and what it means when they have to do things they’re not keen on.

Books that celebrate mums show that there are many things that will be common, just as there will be many differences, and showing the things that are going to be similar allows children to see that wherever you come from, mum’s can be the same about cleaning up or helping, playing and going to bed and doing what mum wants you to do anywhere in the world.

Whilst simple, it does have depths that readers can find and relate to their own lives. It allows readers to see what it means to be a mum, what it means to be a kid, and how everyone can relate to these – and understand what it meant for them in their own lives and experiences. It’s a special book that mums and kids will enjoy reading together, and one that will be loved and enjoyed by many. It is filled with heart and humour in the rhymes as the characters explore their relationship with their mums and talk about how much they love their mums. I loved reading this book, and found it filled with fun and whimsy for all ages.
